Overview of lipomas
Lipomas are usually soft, oval growths that can move slightly under the skin. They are classified as tumours of fat cells although the majority are benign and are just a nuisance. They may become sore when irritated but are generally not painful. Lipomas typically develop slowly over months or years, often staying small but occasionally growing into larger “giant lipomas.”
Although lipomas are generally considered harmless, it is crucial to consult with a doctor to exclude the possibility of a lipoma being linked to another medical condition and to check that it is not a rare malignant form.

Experts still do not know exactly what causes the overgrowth of far cells that cause lipomas, but they can arise due to genetic factors, meaning that if a parent had a lipoma, their child is more likely to have one; or they may present when there is an underlying medical condition.
How do you remove lipomas?
Lipoma treatment varies depending on factors like location, size, and interference with daily life. Some choose removal for cosmetic reasons or anxiety relief. If the lipoma isn’t bothersome, then monitoring is fine.

Excision is the usual method of removing lipomas. Note that a biopsy might be required to rule out underlying conditions, involving sending a sample for laboratory testing.

How much does it cost?
The procedure rarely takes less than 45 minutes, and often longer for the big ones. After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, a small incision is made in the skin. The lipoma is then carefully dissected from the surrounding tissue and removed. In some cases, we may need to extract it in segments. The incision is sutured and dressed. The delicate nature of removing lipomas successfully is reflected in a higher price than for many of our other procedures. you can expect to pay in the region of £485 to £815.

What causes lipomas?
The precise cause of the excessive growth of fat cells leading to lipomas remains unclear to experts.
However, they can be linked to genetic factors, meaning that individuals with a family history of lipomas are at a higher risk.
Research has shown that in addition to genetic inheritance, there may be other factors that increase a person’s risk for developing lipomas, for example;
- Obesity;
- High cholesterol levels;
- Diabetes;
- Liver disease;
- Glucose intolerance.
Additionally, lipomas may indicate the presence of underlying medical conditions, such as multiple hereditary lipomatosis, Gardner syndrome, and Madelung disease.
Typically, these growths occur in middle aged adults. Some patients have several lipomas but the majority have a solitary one.
Do I need to have a pre-op consultation?
