What causes rosacea and what symptoms do you get?

The precise causes of rosacea are not fully understood, but a combination of environmental factors, genetic influences, and immune system elements may play a role. Stress, weather conditions, specific dietary choices, and alcohol consumption can exacerbate rosacea. Interestingly, certain foods such as chocolate, bananas, avocado, spinach, and pork can have pro-inflammatory effects for reasons that remain mysterious. Recent research shows a link with the tiny mite called Demodex.

Rosacea can be difficult to distinguish from other conditions, including acne, dermatitis (eczema), and lupus. So it is important to see a specialist such as one of our doctors to get a confirmed diagnosis.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS/TYPES OF ROSACEA? Symptoms can vary, but they usually involver redness, flushing, skin sensitivity, dry and itchy skin, burning and stinging sensations, as well as the presence of pustules. The condition can also affect the eyes and nose. Rosacea is a persistent disease and the severity of symptoms may fluctuate over time.

Typical symptoms include:

  1. Coarse skin texture
  2. Raised red lumps on the skin
  3. Persistent redness
  4. Irritated or swollen eyes
  5. Enlarged nose

Rosacea treatments

Rosacea often has identifiable triggers, making it essential to identify these triggers to better manage your symptoms. It is best to wear a high SPF sunscreen, minimise exposure to heat and sunlight, protect your face in cold weather, use gentle skincare products, and employ stress management techniques.

While there is no cure for rosacea, there are treatments available to control its symptoms. These treatment options include:

  1. Laser therapy to address visible blood vessels, providing a long-lasting solution for persistent redness. When considering these light treatments, it’s crucial to seek out medically trained laser specialists. Approximately 85% of patients who undergo these treatments experience significant improvements and are highly satisfied with the results.

  2. A new topical product called Soolantra can be very effective for mild to moderate rosacea.
  3. Oral medication, which involves a low-dose antibiotic.  It is highly effective in managing red spots, papules, and pustules.

  4. Skin peels that benefit rosacea by exfoliating the outermost layers of skin, accelerating skin cell turnover, and preventing pore blockage by dead skin cells, which can exacerbate rosacea. Skin peels also aid in reducing inflammation and promoting skin healing.

FAQs

What sort of appointment should I make?

Your first appointment should be a 30 minute ‘skin diagnosis and treatment’  appointment. Subsequent appointments can usually be 15 minute follow up appointments.

Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?

You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
